Taupo
Taupo lies on the northern shore of Lake Taupo, which is formed from two extinct volcanoes and is New Zealand's largest lake with an area of 622 square kilometers. Its only outlet is the Waikato River and all the water is channeled through a chasm 53 feet (16 metres) wide with a 36 feet (11 metre) drop. This is the spectacular world renowned Huka Falls.
On the southern side of Lake Taupo, three massive volcanoes form Tongariro National Park. In winter, these mountains lure thousands of skiers. In the summer many walks are available, ranging from an exhilarating climb in the mountains to a quiet stroll beside a stream running through some of New Zealand's best examples of native bush.
Lake Taupo is known throughout the world for its fantastic year-round trout fishing Many people enjoy cruising on the lake, participating in the many water activities, or simply relaxing on the lake shores. Land activities include helicopter rides, horse treks, bungy jumping, rafting, golfing or visiting nearby thermal areas.
