Picton

Picton is a quaint, small sea fairing village. It lies at the head of the picturesque Queen Charlotte Sound and serves as the southern terminus for the Inter Island Ferries.

Picton has a long maritime connection starting with the early whaling industry and continuing today with the many cruising craft that make Picton a destination from around the world. The Smith Memorial Museum has fascinating displays recalling Picton's early whaling days. Near the ferry terminal is the Edwin Fox, the ninth oldest ship in the world, which is being restored and has displays showing details of the ship's construction.

The Marlborough Sounds is a peaceful unspoilt area with many islands and over 600 miles of empty coastline and small sheltered bays, easily accessible by the many water taxis based at Picton.

This is a wonderful area for those who want to get away from civilization for awhile and enjoy the wilderness activities of camping, hunting, diving, fishing hiking and boating.
