Napier

Napier is known for its 1930's art deco architecture, beautiful coastline, and its multitude of nearby wineries.

In 1931, a massive earthquake destroyed the city of Napier and it had to be completely rebuilt. A fantastic collection of 1930's Art Deco style buildings was the end result. To walk around the quiet tree lined streets is like a trip to a bygone era.

Cape Kidnappers' Gannet Reserve is another major attraction, and contains the largest, most accessible mainland colony in the world. Guided tours run daily.

Napier is the center of the Hawkes Bay wine growing area, eighteen wine producers produce one third of New Zealand's grape harvest and many are open for wine tasting and lunch. This area, with its low humidity and high sunshine hours consistently produce award-winning wines with a fine bouquet and an ability to develop with age.

Some of the other activities available are the kiwi birds at the Napier Kiwi House, the Hawkes Bay Museum, the Aquarium and Marine land of New Zealand which has performing dolphins, sea lions and other marine animals. Swimming with the dolphins is also available at Marine land.
