Milford Sound

Milford Sound is located in the World Heritage National Park and has been described as one of the Natural Wonders of the World, even the road into the sound is one of the worlds finest alpine drives.

Its serrated coastline and deep branching lakes were carved out by glaciers millions of years ago, leaving an area of spectacular scenery, isolation and uninhabited environment. It is one of the wettest places in the world and this rain contributes to the area's beauty. Waterfalls tumble down steep mountains to the sea and rain nourishes rich beech forest.

Boat trips on the Sound are a must and provide close up views of the awesome scenery, wildlife such as dolphins, seals and penguins are often seen in their natural environment. There is also an underwater observatory is nestled in Harrison Cove, guided diving and kayaking. Divers are able to view Red and Black corals living in less than 20 meters.

Fiordland has a worldwide reputation for its walking tracks, which include the Milford Track, Kepler, Routeburn, Hollyford and Greenstone. The township of Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the starting point for many of these treks.
