Dunedin
Dunedin is New Zealand's oldest city. Settled in 1848 by Scottish migrants, the town was designed to remind them of Edinburgh but in 1861 when the Otago Goldfields were discovered this small settlement became the center of the nation's wealth. The building plans became grander and today visitors can see the magnificent cathedral spires, the Flemish- style railway station, a castle, a neo-gothic convent, the old university buildings and many large stone banks and office buildings.
The city is a university town and its young student population gives the town a personality of its own with many venues catering to the arts and music. The art gallery and the museum contain some of the best collections in New Zealand.
Within the city boundaries are two internationally renowned wildlife reserves, one a albatross breeding ground and the other a Yellow Eyed Penguin Colony. Both of these are well worth a visit.
